Industrial automation technology company Turck announced the acquisition of U Grok It, a 6-year-old smartphone-based UHF RFID technology provider. With this acquisition, Turck will be able to use technologies such as Grokker to provide lower-cost RFID-based solutions and to develop more smartphone or tablet devices with built-in RFID reader technology. Chris Vitale, Turck's director of fieldbus technology and marketing director, said the two companies started getting in touch in 2016. In the past year, Turck has been reshaping Grokker technology to meet customer needs. "We have used extensions to use this technology in other ways, and with this acquisition, Turck has the only technology in place," he said. Founded by a team of couples from Carrie and Tony Requist, U Grok It offers low-cost options for consumers who want to use handheld RFID readers to track items. Due to the company's need for asset and inventory tracking, the company released a more commercially valuable Grokker product in 2014. Grokker has built-in rechargeable lithium-ion that can be connected to the phone via the audio port on the top or bottom of the phone. With the application, the phone becomes a UHF RFID reader. Turck offers industrial automation technology products including UHF and High Frequency (HF) RFID solutions for the chemical, energy, food and beverage, oil and gas, packaging, pharmaceutical and semiconductor industries. The company also manufactures hand-held and fixed RFID systems. U Grok It's technology offers a low cost product line. Vitale said handheld RFID readers are currently quite expensive. "We've always wanted to change the status quo, and with the acquisition of U Grok It we're going to see that happen." He added that most commercial hand-held RFID readers and bar code scanners are typically priced at thousands of dollars . Turck is working on an Android-based all-in-one device that will integrate directly into Android devices using Grokker technology for HF, UHF and bar code scanning. He predicts the device will cost less than $ 1,000, far below most of the existing handheld readers. Turck will not only develop its own technology, but will also continue to provide Grokker's Grokker products and customer service to U Grok It and will continue to provide support to developers. Carrie Requist, founder and chief executive officer of U Grok It, said customers can continue to buy their products from Turck and receive customer support and application SDKs for Android or iOS devices. Vitale said: "We will continue to offer these products for the foreseeable future." At the same time, U Grok It will no longer exist as a standalone business and its staff will help transform the company. Sankey said: "By selling the company to Turck, the product line will serve more customers and we are committed to ensuring a smooth transition." Turck explained that by acquiring the smartphone-based technology, the company offers a one-stop shop for software, integrated and fixed readers. Vitale said the new Turck product using U Grok It technology will be interviewed in a matter of months.
